Royal Navy Cask assortment for the 18th century. Withy or withe hooped casks were used since the ancient Gallo-Roman period upto the 20th century to transport and store liquids and dry goods. The oak or pine wood staves of the cask were held together by hoops made of flexibel rods or twigs (withies) of willow, ash, hazel or chestnut. During the late 18th century’s industrial revolution, the Royal Navy started to replaced withy hoops by iron ones.
